Therapy Update for Mary

It's been a while since I shared an update about Mary and her hyptonia.

In August, her physical therapist moved to West Virginia and unofficially released us from therapy at the same time. We agreed I could come back once a month to meet with someone else just to check in and address any concerns I had. I went once in September and skipped October. I went back in November, but really, I only went to confirm that PT wasn't needed any more. Mary seems to have evened out the strength on her left and right sides. Her legs aren't bowing as much and she wants to climb on EVERYTHING she can. So, again, we are unofficially done, though we do have authorization for treatment until next April. Just in case.

As for speech therapy, we still continue to go once a week and work with her more frequently at home. She can say two words - Mama and Yeah. At this point, that is behind the norm, especially since she says neither on command. Thankfully, she has no feeding issues and is always happy to eat macaroni and cheese, applesauce, cheese roll-ups, bananas, and several other foods. She is even a better eater than her big sister.

This isn't to say she can't communicate with us though. We know Mary has strong opinions since she can shake and nod her head vigorously when responding to our questions. A mom stopped me yesterday to tell me how smart she could tell Mary was by how clearly she knew what she did and didn't want. Now we just can't wait to hear it from her mouth.

Regarding her sign language vocabulary, it is increasing too. She says milk, more, eat, please, diaper, and sleep. These are all very helpful words to know too.

Finally, we did have some discouraging news recently regarding our insurance coverage, but thankfully, I was able to resolve that issue this morning and I think we can keep her in ST for another 2 months or so. I am really fond of her therapist, Nikki, and would miss chatting with her each week if we had to cancel our appointments due to funding. Did you know it costs roughly $80 for a 30-minute ST session?! No way could we afford that out of pocket 4 times a month.

  1. So happy to hear all is going well with Mary's development. She certainly looks like a happy and healthy little girl!

  2. She is such a cutie! Glad you had some encouraging feedback.

  3. I'm glad Mary is doing so well. The sign language is a good start.
