The Husband Project - Day 2
Let me just say I had fun reading your comments from Day 1 of the Husband Project. I am sure some of your husbands were shocked at the extra 30-minutes they suddenly had on their hands. Of course, some of you are already on this and it is part of your regular family routine.
For day 2, we are going to reconnect with something our husband's did before we got married.
This might be a tricky one, so if you need all weekend to make it happen, go right ahead. It was mostly easy to figure out how I wanted to do this assignment because my husband loves motorcycles. He has been riding since he was 15 and a motorcycle has been his primary form of transportation for almost our entire marriage. At least once a year he takes off on his bike for a 2-5 day trip and has been some pretty amazing places.
While I am not yet ready for him to go off on a 3-4 week Alaskan motorcycle trip, I do want to make sure he enjoys his motorcycle as a hobby and not just a form of transportation. For this project, I did two things. First, I suggested a day trip on his motorcycle by himself since we weren't in a position for him to be gone the whole weekend. And I also asked if we could ride the bike on a date night after we dropped the girls off at a friend's house. We circled back to our place and hopped on the bike, just like we did before we were married or had kids.

- Many a man’s hobby has gone by the wayside due to matrimony. Is it possible that it’s time you learned to golf or fly fish? Don’t try to beat him, just join him.
- Possibly the only thing your husband would enjoy more than playing chess with you is teaching you how to play chess. Ask for a lesson so he can teach you something that he is an expert at (or really loves). Just your willingness to learn will be a huge boost to your guy.
- Pick up a magazine about your guy’s now dormant hobby. Ask him questions about why he loves it so much. Learn a couple of technical terms so that you are better able to discuss it.
- Do a little research. Find out what the definitive website is on your husband’s favorite subject. Maybe there’s an event in town, a lecture to attend, or a game to watch.

My hubby loves rifle shooting, so Saturday mornings are his time, if he wants, to go to the shooting range. Sometimes the whole family goes, sometimes he goes solo. We usually meet for lunch after and enjoy a family afternoon together.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like fun. I bought Bruce a Groupon for a local gun range and sent him off to do his thing there, all alone. Good stress relief!
DeleteMy hubby is a film buff. Went to school for film and videography. Loves to catch the new movies in the theater(money providing) and watches A LOT of tv. I think Sunday night I'll put the kids to bed early. Make something yummy for us to snack on and then curl up with the Hubby to watch The New episode of The Walking Dead!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to work his interests into your daily life. It's encouraging to see women like you making choices that aren't over the top and breaking the bank, all in the name of pleasing her husband.
DeleteWhat does "vote for me" mean on the list of to dos above?
ReplyDeleteYou just need to click the link... which is not hyperlinking at the moment. I'll go fix that!
DeleteIt's fixed now. You just click the link and your vote is registered. This can be done once per day.
DeleteWe are going to play tennis together at the park tonight!
ReplyDeleteI hope your game is better than mine! :) And I hope you both had fun. Past times that involve physical activity are a great way to grow your health and your marriage.
DeleteMy husband is going out with guy friends tomorrow afternoon
ReplyDeleteMy husband really loves martial arts and what ifs. He comes up with some doozies too. So I've taken up martial arts with him teaching me and spend some time every day if I can letting him talk about his what ifs. He's also into biking (bicycle, not motorcycle) and loves to tinker with the thing, so I'm learning all the parts too.
ReplyDeleteWhat-ifs as in, "what if I won the lottery?" That sounds like fun!
DeleteI thought this day would be the hardest because I honestly did not think my husband had an hobbies outside of our family. Both of our love language is quality time so we are always together. I had been praying about this a lot before I read your post because I felt like he needed something outside of work, church and home.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your post it clicked for me. A few weeks ago at Emily's swim meet Jamie had mentioned that he loves to be a timer. He loves the excitement of the swimmers (Jamie used to be on swim teams as a kid). I am making it my mission this year that at the swim meets Jamie can be as involved as he would like. I sent him to Emily's swim meet today by himself and told him to have fun. I kept the little ones at home.
Awesome idea! And a good example of helping our husbands find their way. I know mine gets so busy with work, family, and church that he doesn't take the time out for the other things he enjoys. It's an added bonus for your daughter that he is so into swimming and they can share this activity.
DeleteThis is a rough one since I just helped him purchase a $300 sound system for the vehicle and gave him time to run around in it for his 30 minutes on day one and he is still gone 2 hrs into it. But I'll try....he loved drums, motorcycles, tennis, football, and sound systems and loves being outdoors...well I got him the sound system...again...and we did a 5 mile hike a few weeks ago for our 1st ever no kid day...can't afford the motorcycle...or new tennis gear ...or new drums...so my only 2 thoughts are to go fishing with him or attend a cheap or free marching highschool band show...either way we rarely get to do things without the kids...so I guess fishing with the family...do you think this counts? At least we have enough rods to do this...

I think that can work just fine! Kathi really emphasizes that this day doesn't have to cost money.
